What do we learn to do in English?

English - a global language

The first thing we learn is to develop listening skills:
  • Listening to live conversations in which we take little or no part (as at a party)
  • Listening while shopping with friends or relatives
  • Watching TV drama, comedy and game shows broadcast in English
  • Listening to and watching the English news on radio, iPods, etc.
  • Listening to national and international news reports, as well as sports and weather reports on TV
  • Watching movies from America, Australia, India, England, etc. for entertainment
  • Watching a live performance of a play
  • Listening to a lecture or speech given in English
  • Listening to callers on the telephone
  • Listening to English lyrics sung in recorded or live songs
  • Listening during business transactions
  • Listening to friends sharing their problems and successes
  • Listening to host families or landlords, if living in an English-speaking country
  • Listening to teachers and supervisors
  • Listening to medical personnel (doctors and nurses)
  • Listeners to bureaucrats to obtain visa and other permits
  • Listening to national and international news reports, as well as sports and weather reports
  • Listening to salespeople and officials, when traveling to an English-speaking country.
